Position: Head Coach

Coach Bob Stephens, has been a part of the Alta Football program since 1998 and has helped lead Alta to two State Championships (2007 & 2008).   Coach Stephens began his coaching career with Provo High School in 1997 working with the Offensive line.  He has held the roles of Head JV Coach, Offensive-line coach and Defensive-Line coach at Alta.

Coach Stephens started playing football at the age of eight and received all CIF awards during High School.  Last checked, he still holds weight lifting records at his high school in La Mirada, CA.  He played center for Brigham Young University from 1987 to 1990.  During his college career he received the All-Western Athletic Conference award and was Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmers center.

Coach Stephens was raised in La Mirada, California, and graduated from La Mirada High School in 1987.  He received a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Range Resources from Brigham Young University in 1992 and a master’s degree in Biological Education also from Brigham Young University in 1998.

He currently teaches biology and wildlife classes at Alta where he is considered an outstanding teacher.  This is Coach Stephens 1st year as the Head Coach of Alta and he is excited to continue with the traditions of Alta Football.

Bob and his wife Jennifer are parents of two daughters, Sarah and Caroline and a son, Adam.

Position: Special Teams & Recievers

After leaving coaching for a dozen years, Coach Berry returned in the 2006 season to coach wide receivers. As Hamilton said, "Doug Berry is Alta football." He was Alta's head football coach from the time the school opened in 1978 until 1994 and won two state championships and one runner-up trophy. Coach Berry, who's father, Rex, was a star for the San Francisco 49ers, was an All-American wide receiver at Southern Utah, where he still holds most of the school's receiving records. He graduated from Jordan High and eventually served as Jordan's head football coach for seven years. He also has coached track, basketball, and tennis. He teaches physical education at Alta. Coach Berry and his wife, Lori, have nine children and 18 grandchildren.

Position: Defensive Coordinator

Coach Ditty joins the Alta staff this year in his 15th year of coaching.

He comes to the Hawks after two years coaching the secondary at Timpview HS winning two strait region championships and the 2009 4A state title. Prior to Timpview, he served as the Co-Def Coordinator at Moorpark College in So Ca. While there he coached nationally ranked teams to consecutive Bowl games, winning the WSC title in 2007.

Previous to Moorpark Coach Ditty was Def Coordinator at Reseda High School in LA City CIF section where his defense's were consistently anked in the top ten. Prior to that he coached LB's at Nevada Union HS.

As a position coach he has produced many all-league and all-state players resulting in a great number of college scholarships. He is grateful and excited to show up to practice every day to work beside these coaches and prepare these young men for competition and for life. He lives in Lehi with his wife Kimberly, daughter Ashley, and his son Tony is serving a mission in Virginia.

Position: Offensive Line

Coach Coggins is in his 3rd year as a coach at Alta High School coaching the offensive line. He also coaches the deep snappers. Coach Coggins grew up in the Ogden area where he was an All-State Defensive Tackle and Tight End for 1985 State Champion, Weber High School Warriors. After high school, he moved on to Dixie Junior College where he played Defensive End.

He then transferred to BYU where he moved to the Offensive Line playing Guard and Center and also handled all the deep snapping duties, earning him the team honor of 1989 Special Teams Play of the year. Coach Coggins has been an attorney for eighteen years and is a partner in the law firm of Coggins, Larreau & Lythgoe, in Ogden, Utah. Coach Coggins now resides in Draper with his wife Paula, daughters, Jantzee (former Alta High Head Varsity Cheerleader), Rylee (current Alta Cheerleader and Softball Player) and his son Cannon (future Hawk).

Position: Line Backers
Coach Kirk Merhish is added to the staff as varsity linebacker coach. Prior to joining the Hawks he was at Hillcrest High, 5 years as head coach, 10 years as defensive coordinator and line coach. He spent one year at Layton High school, one year at Diamond bar High school, and 2 seasons at Riverside Poly high. Coach Merhish play  defensive end at New Mexico State University in 88 & 89. He spent two years as a defensive tackle at Rancho Santiago Community College in Santa Anna, California. Before moving to California, he play high school football at Woods Cross High from 1983-86. He has 4 sons, Nick 18, who was a line backer at Hillcrest from 2007- 2010, Keaton 16, who is a member of the Alta Hawk Lacrosse team, Kabe 8, and Dane 6
Position: Defensive Line

Coach Lui was born in Tonga and raised in Reno, Nevada where he excelled in football and Track and Field. Coach Lui was State Runner up in Discus. Prior to moving to Utah in 2005. Coach Lui was the defensive line coach for his alma mater, Hugh High Hawks, from 2000-2005. He also coached the line for Alta Junior Little League team. He received a BA degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix. Coach Lui has extensive background in the criminal justice field where he worked as a Law Enforcement officer, Corrections and Investigations.

In addition to coaching, Coach Lui loves the culinary arts and now operates a catering business, Tiki Hawaiian BBQ. He is married to Laura Lui, a Alta Hawk alumni. They have two children, Jonathon Fehoko Vavasa and Salina Sariah. Coach Lui enjoys golfing and fishing.

Position: Running Backs

Ty Smith is in his 2nd year coaching at Alta High School. Last season he coached quarterbacks and was defensive scout team coordinator. In 2011, he will be coaching running backs and helping out with quarterbacks. Before coming to Alta, he was an assistant football coach and head girls track coach at Petal High School (6A) in Petal, Mississippi for 3 years. He was a 4 sport athlete in high school in Natchez, MS which included football, baseball, basketball, and track. He went on to start at quarterback for 2 years at Copiah Lincoln Community College in Wesson, MS. He graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology and earned a Masters degree in Sport Coaching Education. He is the Physical Education teacher at Albion Middle School. 

Position: JV Head Coach & Safetys

Coach Jeramy Acker, a 27-year-old college student with a major in Health and minor in History, is in his third year of coaching high school football. He is a former tight-end and defensive end for Taylorsville High. He has been happily married for five years to Coleen and are the proud owners of two beautiful dogs, Kiana & Elora.

 

 

 

Position: Varsity Quarterbacks

Doug Robinson, who has coached track at Alta since 1996, returns to the Alta football staff after a three-year absence, Raised in an Air Force family, he lived everywhere from France to California and all points in between. He played safety and quarterback in high school in the St. Louis area. He attended Utah State on a track scholarship and competed in the sprint events. He has been a columnist and sports columnist at the Deseret News for 32 years. He has written a couple of books, including "Driven," the biography of Larry H. Miller that was released last year. He and his wife Lori have three children -- Preston, Collin and Carly. Preston and Collin played football at Alta and went on to play for Utah State and Utah, respectively.

Position: Corner Backs
Coach Boyce is entering his first season as the defenxive back coach.  Coach Boyce has been a little league coach for three years and is a native of Salt Lake City.  He was an All American wide receiver at BYU and First Team All-State in football and basketball at Olympus High School.  Coach Boyce and his wife Lesli have five childeren, Jordyn, Katie, Steven, Jenna, and Becca and live in Sandy/Draper area.
Position: Soph Head Coach & Running Backs

Coach Casady is in his fifth year with the Alta coaching staff. A former offensive lineman (center), his coaching experience includes two years at his alma mater, Hillcrest, and several years with the Ute Conference. He is a partner in a packaging manufacturing company specializing in products for the medical and personal care industries. He is also active on a variety of boards and commissions including the University of Utah Hospital Foundation. Coach Casaday served in the military for eight years and remains involved in military/community affairs and organizations. Coach Casaday is the proud father of five children, two of which are Alta graduates; Whitnie (Tyler), Brady (Nikki), Marlee, Riley and Lexi and is married to the lovely and talented Kimberlee. They are expecting their first grandchildren (twins) in December.

 

Position: Sophomore Offensive Line

Coach Keim will be coaching the Sophmore O-line.  He has coached in the Alta little league program for the past 6 years.  Coach Keim played Offensive Tackle for Mesa Community College in 1984, and for  BYU from 1987-90.  He played 2 years for the New Orleans Saints and 4 years for the Seattle Seahawks.  He is currently the owner of Teriyaki Grill, a small restaurant chain started by him and his wife Tiffany when his NFL career ended.  they have 5 locations in Utah and 1 franchise store in Lousianna.  Mike and Tiffany have 4 children, Courtney (Junior at Alta), Brayden 8th grade, and twins Avarie and Ella 5th grade.

Position: Soph Defensive Line

Coach Woods played football for the original Alta football coach, Doug Berry, and played football in different leagues for many different teams. Coach “Woody” has been active in the Alta Little League for the last 9 years and he has also coached wrestling at Alta High for the last 16 years.

As his full-time job, he owns Andrew Woods Plumbing. He is been married for 17 glorious years to the most amazing wife, Rachelle Woods. They are the proud parents of 4 children, two girls Tysha & Tacee (currently attending Alta High - Tysha) and two boys - Dallon & Dawson. He states that everything good in his life is due to having a supportive wife and kids. Coach Woody is excited to be here at his alma mater and helping out with the team.

Position: Sophomore Defensive Backs

Coach Troy Apolonio comes to the Alta staff with much excitement and eagerness. He wrestled and played soccer in high school. He attended Weber State University and was in the accounting program when his career opportunity came from Chick-fil-A. He has been an Owner/Operator of a Chick-fil-A restaurant for nearly 15 years. He enjoys fishing, the outdoors, golf, and of course, football - playing, watching, and fantasy. Coach Apolonio has been married to Shan for 13 years and they have two children - Taylor and Kobe.

 

 

Position: Soph Defensive Coordinator

Coach Smart is in his second season coaching at Alta High School. Garret has been an integral part of Alta's football achievements over the last few years, playing linebacker at his alma mater and leading Alta's defense to a state championship in 2008.

His intensity and contagious passion for Alta football is legendary. Aside from spending time growing a goatee, unsuccessfully for a second straight year, Garret is currently attending UVU and is seeking a degree in Engineering. He is a life-long Broncos fan, having spent most of his elementary years in Colorado.

Position: Sophomore Offensive Coordinator
Coach Harrison is in his second season coaching at Alta High School. Coach Harrison has coached for 12 year in the Alta little league program as well as one seaon as head coach of the Utah Bears semi-pro football team in teh RMFL.  Professionally he has worked for CBS Sport covering the NFL, NCAA basketball, Major League Baseball, and College football.  He has also worked covering the Utah Jazz for six seasons, spent five seasons on the play by play voice for the Mountain Crest Mustangs and also covered Utah State Aggies for KVNU in Logan.  He also worked for Media Partners publishing, working directly with golf legend Jack Nicklaus as a publisher of Nicklaus Magazine.  Coach Harrison is married to his wife Tawnya and they have eight children; Brooks, Logan, Naomi, Hayden, Savannah, Jessica, Cosette, and Nancy.
