Alta High School has hired longtime football assistant Bob Stephens to replace Les Hamilton as head coach.
Principal Mont Widerberg confirmed early Wednesday that Stephens was selected over three other finalists. Stephens was an assistant coach at Alta for 13 seasons, serving as offensive line coach and JV coach.
“It's time to get to work," Stephens said.
A former Brigham Young center, Stephens teaches biology and wildlife biology at Alta.
The Alta coaching job was opened in November when Hamilton, who coached at Alta for six seasons, left for a seafood exporting job in Chile. Under Hamilton, Alta won state championships in 2007 and 2008, and advanced to the semifinals every year before this one. This season Alta struggled to a 4-7 record after starting the season 0-4 and bowed out to Northridge in the first round of the playoffs.
Stephens said the program doesn't require a total overhaul in the wake of one losing season, but the coaching staff and other aspects of the program will be evaluated in the coming months.
"Coach Hamilton has established a wonderful winning program, my plans are to take the best of his things and throw in a little bit of mine, too," Stephens said.
