With a 27-7 win over Pleasant Grove, the Lone Peak Knights easily secured their first outright region championship since 2004. While Bingham and Cottonwood have drawn attention for their undefeated seasons and Fremont scored high on drama in its win over Davis, Lone Peak quietly has gone about the business of winning.

“We don’t try to make a big thing about it,” coach Tony McGeary says. “We just try to go one week at a time and take care of our games as they come.”

But then again, Region 4 isn’t what it used to be. The region standings now have 4-5 Alta solidly in second place, followed by a Brighton team that could tie Alta by beating a Jordan squad that hasn’t broken out as it had hoped. In 2009, four Region 4 teams had more than six wins, as opposed to only Lone Peak this year.

In last year’s playoffs, the only Region 4 team to lose its first-round game was Jordan, which was playing Bingham. But the indications seem to point to a possible change in the winds — though the records may have been skewed by more difficult schedules in 2010. Alta’s losses came against teams that now are a combined 30-2, and was the only one to play all of the remaining unbeaten teams in 5A and 4A: Cottonwood, Bingham and Timpview.

Brighton’s other two losses, besides Alta, came at the hands of Lone Peak and Davis — both one-loss teams. Jordan has an ugly loss to American Fork, but also is the only team that has beaten Region 1 champ Fremont.
