Playoff Fever
Of the 100 football teams, 10 have already been booted from postseason contention (67 will eventually qualify). Ten more face elimination this week. Class 5A has filled six spots, in 4A, just three are taken and in 3A, seven more berths – nearly half – are filled. The next two weeks will be crammed with meaningful games for qualifying and seeding and for deciding region champions.
All 12 Class 2A teams qualify for the playoffs and this week's final regular season contests will determine both league champs and seeding for the next week's first round games.
In the race for region championships, no team has yet claimed an outright title, but Lone Peak (Region 4), Springville (Region 8), Juan Diego (Region 11), San Juan (2A East) and Duchesne (1A North) have locked up at least a share of a league crown.
Here's a region-by-region run down with the teams that have clinched, the number of open berths, projections for which teams will fill those spots and a look at some of the region championship possibilities.
Region 4 – In: Lone Peak. Open berths (3): Alta, Jordan, Brighton. Out: none
Alta is in with a win over Hillcrest and the Huskies will be eliminated. PG and Brighton will clinch a tie for a berth with victories over Lone Peak and American Fork, respectively. PG has the toughest road to qualifying with Lone Peak and Alta ahead. Most likely, a Brighton beating of AF means the winner of Brighton at Jordan next week takes third and the loser is fourth.
Defending region champ Lone Peak has secured the No. 1 seed and a share of its eighth league title. A victory over PG will hand the Knights their sixth outright region crown.
