Highland • There was Chase Hansen’s brilliance, Lone Peak’s unyielding defense and the slick running of Talon Shumway.

It wasn’t until Kyle Hanneman stepped in front of a Boston Handley pass for an interception, however, that the Knights’ 28-24 win over Alta was safe Friday night. When he did, it touched off a wild celebration on the Lone Peak sideline and in the stands.

“This was a huge win for us,” Hanneman said. “We were beaten pretty good by them last season, and we wanted to come back strong from that.”

For the Knights, it was a huge victory for other reasons. With the win, Lone Peak goes to 5-1 on the season. More importantly, the Knights go to 3-0 in Region 4, which puts them another step closer to the league title and the two playoff home games that come with it.

Lone Peak, in large part, has Hansen to thank for the win. In his first game back since suffering a concussion early in the season, the junior quarterback showed why he may someday be a Division I college football player.

Using his arm, Hansen was 9-for-18 for 112 yards and a touchdown. With his feet, Hansen carried the ball 16 times for 167 yards and another score. He was complemented beautifully by Shumway, who ran 14 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Shumway, who filled in admirably for Hansen at quarterback, went back to his natural running back slot and was as effective as ever.
