Les Hamilton’s Alta Hawks did not take the Brighton Bengals for granted this time around.
Alta, which lost to Brighton by more than a touchdown last season, blew the game open after halftime Friday, cruising to a 35-16 victory to remain in first place in Region 4.
Alta started the season with three straight losses, and was looking to build momentum after last week’s big victory over Jordan.
Meanwhile, Brighton was hoping to rebound from a 28-7 home loss to Lone Peak and get back in the region race.
The Bengals hung tough Friday, trailing 14-10 with 56 seconds to play in the half.
That’s when Alta went to work.
Hawks quarterback Boston Handley hit Jovan London in stride for a long gain to the Bengals’ 14-yard line. From there, Handley connected with Ammon Barker in the corner of the end zone to complete a quick two-play touchdown drive for a 21-10 halftime lead.
On the big play before half, Hamilton thought about running the clock out, but London’s catch changed his mind quickly.
“It was huge for us,” Hamilton said. “I challenged them before the game, let’s have an identity. Let’s have an identity for the rest of the season. Hopefully tonight is going to be the way it is for us the rest of the season.”
Lost in the dramatic end of the half was the play of Alta running back Taylor Eyring. The senior rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns.
“Taylor is special back,” Hamilton said. “He’s got speed, power and agility. We want to get him the ball as much as possible.”
It would’ve been a perfect night for Eyring, but his fumble deep in Alta’s territory helped Brighton get back in the game.
Derek Newell capitalized on the Eyring fumble as he scored from two-yards out.
The touchdown gave the Bengals life as they trailed 28-16. But Eyring sealed the game with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
